The castle has been slowly deteriorating ever since and now sits in ruins. It remained in the family until the clan's fall following the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The McQuillans lost two battles to the MacDonnell-MacDonald clan, who then took over the castle. It was initially owned by the McQuillan family, who were Lords of the Route (a medieval territory of Gaelic Ireland that included the site where Dunluce was built) until about the late 16th Century. The first part of the castle was built in the 13th Century by Richard Óg de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster. Yet it's more than fictional TV characters that have roamed these medieval walls.
